ES is Experimental Songcycles, a cover for the solo workings of Sami Sänpäkkilä, hub of the Fonal universe and prime mover in the contemporary Finnish free folk scene. This is his third album and the title translates as The beauty And Inconceivableness Of Everything, a suitably breathless piece of hyberbole that primes you for the slack jawed, ecstatic charge of the music. es works from short spooling loops - hypnotic piano, shortwave chatter, bowed guitars and music boxes - overlaid with variously degenerated recordings culled from everything from spurts of dictaphone sound to lush studio blasts. Despite the predominantly female vocals being in Finnish, the lyrics all make immeadiate phonetic sense, vibrating like atavistic vowels and consonants freed from the weight of words and rhymes. The evocative use of loops evokes the damaged starfields of William Basinski and early Indrustial pioneers like Two Daughters, while the melancholic grandeur finds an echo in the evanescent peaks of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Just Fantastic.
