Observant readers of the latest Broken Face issues have probably
noticed the increasing number of Finnish bands making their way into these
pages. Perhaps a mere toss-up but more likely proof of a vital scene that
slowly seems to be finding its way out of the closet towards the international
podium. One man with better chances than most to reach out to a larger audience
should be sound architect Sami Sänpäkkilä of Es. First out
is the eerily beautiful "Rainpipe" consisting of sparse guitarscapes
that sound like they were carved out of silence with the precision of an ice
sculptor. Despite the emptiness and space that surrounds every single note
there’s a beckoning textural warmth that keeps it from sounding too
distant. The following "Clink" demonstrates a lot of what this album
is all about. The music creates a real sense of the unexpected, and achieves
a viable balance between spontaneity and calculated guitar precision. Occasionally
there’s a fragment of a melody rising to the surface, but soon it’s
buried in fuzz or a tranquilizing drone affair. The freezing clarity of the
glacial "Kemialliset Häät" meanders almost all the way
through its six minutes with nothing but soft touches on the home-built electric
guitar. The slowly emerging guitar details make this baby fly well over the
clouds. Another highlight is "Baureuth-Ulvila in 16 h" which is
built around a slowly unfolding distant drone that underpins the quite glorious
guitarwork present all through the album. If this blend of found sounds and
guitar beauty doesn’t mess up your nervous system you’ll probably
think that Omit is stuff for wankers too. - Mats Gustafsson
